Here
is how to submit a search:
- In the first space enter in the word or words
which you wish to search for. This could be an author's name or a
subject. If you wish to perform a search on "crime" then you should
type this word into the field.
- The next part of the search engine deals with
the method used to match your word(s). This function is meaninful
only if you submit more than one search word. If you entered "crime
retribution" there are three options for you to choose from:
- ALL: When this option
is chosen, only those pages that contain all of the words you
submitted in the field mentioned above will be counted as valid
"hits."
- ANY: When this option
is chosen, any page containing any one of the words
you submitted in the field mentioned above will be counted as
valid "hits."
- BOOLEAN: This search
allows you to use "and" as well as "or" between your words to
refine your search better than if you just used ALL
or ANY.
- The next part deals with how you display the
valid "hits" that are returned to you.
- LONG: This will allow
you to see a small part of the page that the search engine found
to match your search criteria.
- SHORT: This only gives
you a link in the form of a URL to follow to the document(s) that
match your query.
- The last item is the SEARCH
button. After you have entered a subject word or words and made choices
from the pull-down menus you can then choose the SEARCH
button to start searching. The search only includes documents
at the Western Criminology Review web site. Users wishing to
use more general internet search engines can go to http://www.sonoma.edu/cja/info/search.html.
