Karen Umemoto
Karen Umemoto is an assistant professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. She received her doctorate in Urban Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. Her general area of interest is planning and governance in a multicultural society with a focus on race relations. Her areas of research include hate crimes, gang violence, and community building. Currently, she is continuing her study of race-bias hate crimes in Los Angeles County and serves as a consultant to the National Institutes Against Hate Crimes at the Museum of Tolerance.
